Athletes Village, Commonwealth Games
The Games Village is located on the 92acre site of the Akshardam Temple Complex, bounded by National Highway No24 to the south, 60m/40m wide roads the east and west, thick foliage and railway line beyond to the north. A flat site, it lies in the Yamuna river basin. To maintain a park land setting for The Temple Complex, accommodation is offset around two intersecting axes. The primary east west axis forms a Ceremonial Boulevard through the ‘International Zone’. The secondary north south axis runs through the residential quarter. An amphitheatre on the intersection of the axes overlooks the river.
Sustainable design provisions include; compact built form and terrace gardens to manipulate the micro climate; natural ventilation; rainwater harvesting; optimal orientation; earth air tunnel based cooling; maximum use of daylight with shaded fenestration to south and west facades.
